The Creation of Simplicity
Share
It all began with a simple prompt to an AI to create a minimal poster design about simplicity. The AI's response was surprisingly close to the final result, but with one intriguing twist - it couldn't quite get the text right.
Instead of "SIMPLICITY", the AI produced "SIMPIC C ITI Y".
This "error" caught my attention. It wasn't just a mistake; it was a snapshot of AI capabilities at this moment in time. As AI models continue to evolve rapidly, this particular quirk might soon be a thing of the past. I decided to immortalize this fleeting moment of imperfection.
But what exactly is this approximation of "Simplicity"? Is it "Sim Pic"? Is there a hidden "City" within? Or is it merely a typographic artifact? These questions fueled my creative process.
Inspired by the AI's output, I set out to recreate and refine the design in Processing using my own code to achieve a print template for a high-quality print. This process allowed me to reason about fonts, proportions, and aesthetical aspects. To do so, I employed mathematical functions to generate the proportions, intentionally incorporating a margin of error. This 'programmed imperfection' lends a certain lightness to what would otherwise be a rigid grid system.
The "Simplicity" poster embodies a paradox: the complexity behind apparent simplicity. It's a visual representation of the ongoing dialogue between human insight and machine learning. The 'imperfection' in its execution becomes a powerful statement, highlighting the nuanced journey towards achieving true simplicity.
I'm struck by the paradox this experiment has revealed: the complexity behind apparent simplicity. What began as a straightforward prompt has unfolded into a multi-layered exploration of AI capabilities, human interpretation, and the nature of simplicity itself.
I find myself questioning: What does simplicity truly mean? How do our imperfections - and those of our AI counterparts - contribute to the beauty and meaning of our creations?
In this spirit, this experiment has shown me once again that every glitch, every imperfection, tells a story of progress and creativity. It's in these unexpected moments that true innovation often lies.
