Mono/Tensions: A Glimpse into Algorithmic Evolution

In the realm where computational evolution meets artistic intention, Moving Targets emerges as an exploration of generative aesthetics. Today, we're offering a first look at "Mono/Tensions" - an evolving population of monochromatic artworks shaped by the interplay of artificial intelligence and human perception.

The Living Gallery

At the heart of Moving Targets lies a unique browser interface (targets.phasenpunkt.de) that serves as a window into the evolutionary process. Here, each artwork exists within a complex genealogy, its visual characteristics inherited and mutated across generations. Visitors can influence the evolutionary trajectory through direct voting, becoming active participants in the artwork's development.

The current population, now in its 72nd generation, demonstrates remarkable aesthetic convergence while maintaining genetic diversity. Each image carries forward successful traits from its ancestors while exploring new visual territories through mutation and recombination.

The AI Art Critic

What sets Moving Targets apart is its sophisticated evaluation system. An AI critic, trained to analyze both objective and subjective aspects of each artwork, provides detailed aesthetic assessments. This critic evaluates works across multiple dimensions - from technical execution to emotional resonance - creating a fitness landscape that guides the evolutionary process.

Materialization

The project culminates in a series of Fine Art Prints, where digital evolution manifests in physical form. Every two months, one artwork will be selected from the fittest specimens and offered in a limited edition. Each edition's size (1-7 prints) is determined randomly, introducing an element of chance to the final materialization. The series will conclude after seven prints, marking a defined endpoint to this evolutionary exploration.

Join the Evolution

We invite you to explore the living gallery at targets.phasenpunkt.de. Your interactions and votes will help shape the future generations of these evolving artworks, contributing to a collective exploration of computational creativity.

A more comprehensive interface for the living gallery is in development. What you find at targets.phasenpunkt.de is a fully operational prototype, with all its edges and glitches.

The first Fine Art Print selection will be announced in early 2025.
